Learning by Doing: Farziya’s Journey in Building a Career in Digital Business
Early Inspiration: A Business Mindset from the Start
Fathima Farziya’s passion for business started early in life. Growing up in Sri Lanka, she was inspired by her father, who owned a garment factory, and found joy in school projects that involved crafting and small-scale trading. While she also had an interest in computer science, her love for business and marketing stood out—especially because it combined creativity with strategy. From a young age, she envisioned a career that was both dynamic and impactful.
Facing the Crossroads: Traditional University vs. Practical Learning
After completing her A-levels, Farziya found herself at a crossroads. Despite her good academic results, the idea of spending four years in a traditional, theory-heavy university program felt uncertain. She was well aware of the growing number of graduates struggling to find jobs, and she didn’t want to follow the same path.
“I knew there was a risk in going to university because it’s hard to find a proper job as well in a market, so that was one thing which I was like, maybe I’m not a job person. Maybe I’m a businessperson”
What she really needed was a learning model that could offer both solid education and real-world experience—something that could help her stand out in a saturated job market.
A Game-Changer: Discovering eduCLaaS
Finding eduCLaaS was a turning point. Its “earn-and-learn” approach was exactly what Farziya had been looking for.
“This sounds pretty good because from the second year onwards it’s like self-funding. Basically, only the first year I must pay and then secondly onwards it was paying through what I earned basically”
The program kicked off with a 12-month digital marketing bootcamp, where she dove deep into essential areas like website development, digital strategy, and business management.
But what truly set eduCLaaS apart was the opportunity to gain apprenticeship experience from the second year onward. By the end of the program, she wouldn’t just have a diploma—she’d have three years of hands-on industry experience to go with it.
Learning by Doing: Gaining Real-World Experience
The bootcamp’s rigorous schedule—running from 6:30 AM to 3:30 PM Sri Lankan timezone—was intense, but it instilled in Farziya the kind of discipline and time management that’s essential in any professional setting. Through practical projects like creating functional websites and making real sales calls, she wasn’t just learning theory—she was applying it in real time. These experiences boosted her confidence and gave her a clear view of what a career in digital marketing could look like.
Stepping Into the Industry
Today, Farziya is working as a Marketing Associate apprentice at eduCLaaS itself. Her role has been rich and varied—from designing landing pages and building email campaigns to scripting videos and editing content. These diverse tasks have helped her discover a strong passion for the creative side of marketing, particularly in visual storytelling and branding.
“It is a fun experience. I’m learning a lot of things like every day I learn new things and there’s like new tasks coming in as well. Since I’ve been here, there have been several tasks I’ve done. It’s not only just one task I’ve done like website like landing page designing, e-mail creation and then like content like script created, creating and now I’m currently doing video editing.
I think my skills are not only increasing in one place. I think I have the ability to do different tasks as well.”
Personal Growth: Lessons Beyond the Classroom
Balancing her Bachelor’s studies and work is not always easy, but the experience has pushed Farziya to grow in ways she never expected. She’s learned how to prioritize, manage deadlines, and adapt to changing situations—skills that will serve her for life. Even when facing difficult assignments, she’s developed the resilience to push through, knowing that each challenge brings her one step closer to her goals.
Looking Ahead: Confidence in the Future
One of the most valuable takeaways for Fathima has been realizing just how fast the digital marketing world evolves. Trends change quickly, and staying ahead requires ongoing learning and adaptability. This insight has driven her to stay curious, sharp, and always ready to upskill. Now, at just 21 years old, she’s not only building a career in her dream field—she’s already ahead of the curve.
