From the Usual to the Unexpected: Sajatha’s Breakthrough in Digital Business

From Conventional Paths to Courageous Choices
For many students in Sri Lanka, the post-high school route is straightforward: complete your A-levels, then pursue a university degree abroad. This was the case for Sajatha’s siblings and peers—but not for him.
“I had done my A levels and got pretty good results… I was considering options, you know, checking out universities and seeing where I could go. Then I got this phone call from my local campus about this work-study degree. It was pretty new to Sri Lanka.”

While the traditional bachelor’s degree route meant going overseas, Sajatha saw something different in the eduCLaaS Digital Business program: an opportunity to gain real-world experience while earning a globally recognized degree. But it wasn’t without concern.

“There were no other batches above us doing Digital Business. It was a big risk… We even contacted University of Roehampton to verify it was legit.” But the work-study model, lower costs, and ability to be financially independent convinced him—and his parents—that this path was worth pursuing.

So, what made him say yes?
  1. Real-world experience before graduation
“Most companies now look for work experience more than the degree itself. This gave me a big advantage.”
  2. Financial independence
“From the second year onwards, I paid for my own tuition… I wanted to take that burden off my parents.”
  3. Pandemic-proof learning
“After COVID, traveling to a university seemed impossible. This gave me flexibility without disruption.”
A Learning Experience That Actually Feels Real
From his very first orientation week, Sajatha was struck by how different this was from traditional learning. His classes were filled with hands-on projects, practical scenarios, and interactive mentors.

One standout experience? A marketing simulation project.

“Our mentor made us believe we were launching a real cafe business. We created social media profiles, built a website, and developed a marketing strategy. It felt real—and that’s what made it so effective.”

He especially struggled with SEO at first—until he applied it in practice.

“SEO is quite hard to understand if you just rely on theory. But going into the backend, inserting keywords into blogs… that helped everything click.”
Skills That Set His Career in Motion
Among all the skills he learned, one platform became pivotal in his career: HubSpot.

“We were introduced to HubSpot during bootcamp. Since then, I’ve been working with it at my job. It’s helped me grow so much professionally.”

And the flexibility of the program helped him solve even logistical challenges. When time zone differences caused him to miss important lessons, he and a fellow Sri Lankan student coordinated with eduCLaaS to adjust their schedules to avoid missing core content—a change traditional universities would rarely accommodate.
From Marketing Associate to Executive: Navigating the Next Level
Sajatha’s journey didn’t stop after the bootcamp. Once he secured his first role as a Marketing Associate, the real challenge began—translating what he learned into consistent performance in the workplace. At first, he struggled to keep up with the fast pace and the level of independence expected from him.

“I had the foundation, but there was still so much to learn on the job—tools, deadlines, client expectations.” The pressure was real, and imposter syndrome crept in. But instead of letting it overwhelm him, he leaned into the same hands-on approach that had worked during his bootcamp.

He revisited his eduCLaaS project materials, rewatched LinkedIn Learning modules provided during the program, and even reached out to mentors when he hit roadblocks. Most importantly, he brought a problem-solving mindset to work—taking ownership of digital campaigns, experimenting with strategies, and tracking performance data using HubSpot, a tool he had already mastered during training.

That proactive attitude paid off.

Within months, Sajatha’s work began turning heads. He wasn’t just executing tasks—he was analyzing results, suggesting improvements, and delivering real impact. That growth mindset, combined with real-world readiness, earned him a promotion to Digital Marketing Executive even before graduating from the program.
Looking Ahead: Dreams of Building Something of His Own
Now working as a Digital Marketing Executive, Sajatha is already thinking bigger.

“In five years, I want to open my own marketing agency. I’ll start small—maybe with some trusted colleagues—and gradually build a client base. Eventually, I want to step away from full-time work and manage my own business.”

His advice to other students?

That proactive attitude paid off.

“Don’t just accept the first company that hires you. If you don’t match their values, it’ll be a waste of time. Find work that you love, with a company you align with.”
