From Hesitation to Confidence: Kirk Ian Batucan’s Rise Through Work-Integrated Learning
Choosing a Different Path Over Convention
When most students in the Philippines think about higher education, the traditional four-year Bachelor’s Degree immediately comes to mind. But for Kirk Ian Batucan, a 20-year-old from Cebu, the usual route didn’t quite match the future he envisioned.
“Even when you graduate with a college degree, it’s still hard to find a job,” Kirk shared. His voice carried both frustration and realism—sentiments echoed by many young Filipinos navigating the job market today. This uncertainty led Kirk to pursue an alternative route: a Digital Business program through eduCLaaS, in partnership with the University of Cebu.
At first, Kirk had doubts. “Before I joined eduCLaaS, I wasn’t even considering it. It wasn’t part of my plan,” he admitted. Like many of his peers, he initially leaned toward more traditional academic paths, even considering software engineering. But after learning more about eduCLaaS and its integrated work-study format, he made a bold pivot that would shape not just his career—but his mindset.
Beyond Academics: A Church Musician Finds His Rhythm
Growing up, Kirk was the kind of student who consistently earned awards and recognition. However, his true passion lay beyond school walls. “I’m a church guy. I play instruments and manage multimedia at our church.” Music, not sports, was his sanctuary. This artistic background unknowingly prepared him for the creativity and discipline demanded by a digital business career.
Kirk described his family as middle-class, “not struggling, but surviving.” While not facing extreme financial hardship, the idea of working while studying and funding his own tuition was highly appealing. The flexibility and practicality of eduCLaaS made it the right fit at the right time.
The Power of Experience Over Theory
What ultimately convinced Kirk to choose eduCLaaS? Two things stood out.
“Number one, it’s the three years of work experience, In a job market that demands hands-on experience even from fresh graduates, this aspect felt like a game-changer. Number two, we have a salary—I can finance my own tuition.”
The structure of the program allows students to earn while they learn, gradually building a resume filled with real projects, tools, and measurable impact.
Fast-Paced Boot Camp with Meaningful Mentorship
Kirk’s first year involved an intensive boot camp covering 10+ modules over just as many months. It wasn’t easy.
“Some parts were really hard, especially when learning tools like Google Analytics, but we had mentors who checked in constantly. If I didn’t understand a topic, they’d make sure I did.”
This direct support was a stark contrast to the distant, generalized approach often seen in traditional universities. “That’s a big difference between this and my friends’ schools. I can ask questions any time. I have access to mentors 24/7.”
Kirk found the pace challenging but invigorating. Each module brought a new skillset, from SEO basics to business strategy. “You don’t dig deep for too long before you move on. It keeps you moving, keeps you learning.”
A Defining Moment: The Apprenticeship Experience
Today, Kirk is in his eighth month as an apprentice, working as a Marketing Associate. This role has transformed him from a student into a young professional.
“I use Canva all the time, but what I’m really excited about is learning HubSpot—making landing pages, emails. In boot camp, we couldn’t use tools like HubSpot because they’re paid. But here, I can experiment freely.”
But his growth hasn’t been limited to hard skills. One of the most transformative aspects of his journey has been the development of soft skills, especially communication.
“I used to struggle with English, but now, I lead a project in the adaptive learning curriculum. I have to talk to people, manage tasks, and lead teams. It’s helping me improve a lot.”
This wasn’t just theoretical leadership either. Kirk had to balance multiple roles, meet deadlines, and manage his time wisely—something that’s sharpened his discipline and drive. “It’s hard to keep up sometimes, but I’m proud that I’m still fighting.”
A Message to Future Students
To high schoolers unsure of what comes next, Kirk has one clear message:
“If you want academic learning and practical experience combined, you should go to eduCLaaS. Especially if you’re from the Philippines—this is your sign.”
His story isn’t about being the smartest student or having everything figured out from the start. It’s about adaptability, courage, and choosing a path that aligns with both personal values and market demands.
Kirk Ian Batucan didn’t follow the traditional route—but he found his rhythm, his confidence, and his future.
